Captain Edward Frederic
Robert Bage, 3rd Field Company Division Engineers, of St Kilda East,
Vic.
Highly gifted, Edward Bage
matriculated at age 14 and trained as a civil engineer and a surveyor.
He took part in Douglas Mawson's Australasian Antarctic Expedition
(1911-1914) as astronomer, assistant magnetician and recorder of
tides.
When Mawson and his companions failed
to return to winter quarters at the expected time, Bage volunteered for
a relief party of six that remained in the Antarctic for a second
winter.
He led a party on a dangerous 1000 km
journey hauling sleds over the ice and was awarded the King's Polar
Medal in 1915.
Enlisting in August 1914 as second in
command of the 3rd Field Company of Engineers, Capt Bage took part in
the landing at Gallipoli. |
