The Cross of St George with the
stars of the Southern Cross inside a
Waratah wreath and ensigned with the Queen Victoria Crown made up the "Badge of the Colony" of NSW
from 4 July 1876.
The military started to use it in
1881 and when they did it had a scarlet cloth backing
The slouch hat was fastened with a
General Service button bearing this badge by Reserves and any other
unit that did not have a Regimental badge.
Helmet plates of this badge design
were worn on the universal pattern cork helmets by Artillery,
Engineers and others.
