History of the Badges of the Australian Army (1903 to 1966)

This section draws heavily on research by Alfred N Festberg as presented in his book Australian Army Insignia 1903-1966. He concentrated only on units in the 1966 Order of Battle.

Introduced in 1949 to replace the silvered general Service (Rising Sun) badge

St Edward's Crown was introduced in 1955. Made from white-metal or silver plated metal.

Replaced the General Service badge in 1951 but was never manufactured as hat badge

New design approved in 1955

2nd Cavalry Regiment RAAC

  • This unit was formed from 2nd/14th Queensland Mounted Infantry and 4th/19th Prince of Wales Light Horse so until this badge was approved the Unit wore the badges of those Units.

1st/15th New South Wales Regiment RAAC (formerly Light Horse units) Click to return to top of page

Re-introduced in 1948 having been worn prior to WW2 by the Unit in it's Light Horse role.

Approved in 1966 and introduced in 1967. Manufactured from super pure aluminium.

2nd/14th Queensland Mounted Infantry RAAC Click to return to top of page

Approved October 1949 with the initials A.L.H. On 21 July 1950 the initials were altered to read R.A.A.C. Never manufactured.

Approved in November 1955 ensigned by St Edward's Crown

3rd/9th South Australian Mounted Rifles RAAC (CMF) Click to return to top of page

This design with the Tudor Crown and the Piping Shrike (bird) in black and white enamel was approved in 1949 but was never manufactured.

Approved in 1949 but never manufactured

 Approved with St Edward's Crown in 1955

10th Western Australian Mounted Infantry (CMF)

  • Approval was given in 1949 for the badge of the 10th Western Australian Mounted Infantry with Tudor Crown, (above left)

 

  • The St Edward's Crown version (above) replaced it in 1955.

 

  • In 1960 this Unit changed names to 10th Light Horse and a new badge (see left) was approved.

12th/16th Hunter River Lancers

This badge was approved in 1949
